Pioneer Tunnel stopped mining in 1931, and in 1962 the people of Ashland reopened it so everyone could see what anthracite work really looked like. A local nonprofit still runs it, from the mine car ride into the mountain to the 1927 steam train around Mahanoy Mountain. Go once and you'll understand this corner of the valley a little better.
